Shadows and Fragments – A Review of ‘For This Is The Rot Of Existence’ by BLACNK

Immediately hallucinogenic, with a canorous undercurrent that percolates beneath the thickest of skins, BLACNK commences and ends strong on For This Is The Rot Of Existence.

Veteran listeners will immediately make comparisons to early Immortal, vocally speaking, and musically this is a cross between Limbonic Art meets Immortal meets Oranssi Pazazu for me; with Blacnk forging his own identity through the kaleidoscopic chants that blithely drape the compositions, giving the song a near demented carnival-esque feel. Add this to ingenious use of synth and strings, and you are simply dissolved into the songs. What’s more, you’ll be doing it with a smile on your face… despite the malevolent bacchanal overtones.

I’m especially fond of what happens halfway through the first song ‘Give Myself Over To Shame’, and how that is used to signal the gradual winding down of the track (this is the track to check if you can only check one). ‘In A World Of Shadows’ has a slight eastern feel about it, but continues the patterns aforementioned. This one is a lot more enigmatic, a slow burning ethereal experience… it evokes the feeling of macabre evil spirits toying with you, and it is this macabrely flirtatious tone that you too will embrace, and which results in the album’s terrifying nature. It’s almost as though you were inconsequential; merely there to be a thing of amusement for this entity that is fascinated by you.

‘A Symphony Of Heartaches’ is the album’s reflective offering, at once grim and with the most vocal hypnotism of the lot; a great addition to the Blacnk arsenal and definitely a mechanism I would love to see Blacnk build on. ‘Within Shattered Fragments’ has the hugest Limbonic feels in that synth use, but once again, I stress that Blacnk has it’s own wonderfully demented sound.

Yes, there is something wonderful here that I feel can appease both purists and those looking for a dash of experimentation in their music. A very unusual place to be musically. In short, it is… antagonistically mischievous.
